Today we’re on the sixth question that Tim Ferriss asked people in his book “Tribe of Mentors” (you can see all of the questions here):
What is an unusual habit or an absurd thing that you love?
Of the 11 questions that he asked, there were only two that I didn’t find anything highlight worthy — #2 (Purchases of $100 or less) and this one.
As I thought about the answer for myself, I tried to come up with something useful. However, reading Robert’s thoughts on this one (“For a while, I always skipped the last step when walking on a staircase — up or down.“), I realized that wasn’t the point of the question. It was simply looking for something unusual or absurd.
I decided that working out almost everyday in VR (via Supernatural, which I shared a few years ago) probably counts. How many people do you know that spend 30-60 minutes in VR pretty much every day? That’s unusual, for sure.
In my time in Supernatural so far I’ve racked up just over 500,000 points. There are people with much more than that, but it’s still a pretty big number. A typical song earns roughly 100 points, so that means I’ve worked out to roughly 5,000 songs in the headset! That’s quite unusual and absurd. 🙂
What’s an unusual or absurd habit that you have?

Semi-unusual: Often, but certainly not always, when reading a book, I try to find a partner to “co-read” it with me. Basically, we read the same chapter or section and swap notes with each other.
Similar to co-reading, and actually the source of the idea, the “One Year Challenge,” of going through the New Testament, a chapter a day, with a partner and exchanging notes.
For many years I’ve done a daily “one line” journal, noting the major events, accomplishments, or whatever, for the day. I’ve organized this such that each year, I review all past entries for this same calendar date. Sort of a textual TimeHop.
In the slightly absurd category; years back when I was traveling a lot, I started using GasBuddy to help me find a good gas station (with low prices) ahead. In recent years, I’ve “accidentally” become a top gas price reporter and have a pretty long streak of never missing a day. No practical value in that, I just like seeing the ranking numbers.
More into the totally absurd category, sometime in the last year or so, I’ve started a “habit” (or just call it OCD if you want) of always putting pods into a Keurig with the label facing me. I don’t care if anybody else does or doesn’t do the same, and I don’t really care if I don’t, but because I can, I do.

Those are great! I love the idea of the “one line journal”. It’s kind of like Matthew Dicks’ “Homework for life” that I try to do everyday, but I’m inconsistent.
Your use of GasBuddy reminds me of my oddly-continued use of Foursquare for checking in at various places, but yours is of much greater value to other people!
