It’s obvious to me

As I’ve shared before, my primary motivation for this blog is selfish — it’s a place for me to think through new ideas and concepts. The act of listening, then unpacking, then polishing, and then sharing helps me to better understand new things that I come across.

There have been times when I’ve been a bit reluctant to share something because it just seems too obvious, and it’s something that “everyone already knows”. No matter the topic, that is likely never true.

A recent episode of “The Long and The Short Of It” podcast got into this very subject and shared examples of when they were worried about being “too obvious” and it turns out that their content was still very helpful to people. That leads to two thoughts for me:

  1. I should share freely, knowing that some people will benefit from this content. Perhaps you already know about the deception of “too obvious”, but likely there is content in other posts that would be helpful for you.
  2. The reverse is also true; there are things that likely should be obvious to me at my role and age in life, but they aren’t (I know I have blind spots), so staying open is wise.

This is why I have no problem listening to a talk about something that I “already know”, because there will inevitably be a new wrinkle or insight that I’d never considered, thus making my knowledge of that subject even better.

I’ll still tend to shy away from things that seem obvious, but I need to push through in the hopes that even “obvious” things can be helpful to both you and I.
